Built from scratch review
Before pressing any of the episodes of "built from scratch" , I observe Betty standing outside her next product with a piercing smile on her face and, her non-wrinkled pants suit always paired with glass shoe loafers - that are so shiny you can see almost see the reflection of the camera in them. She leads us through the opening of the house she has been decorating the whole series to display the product of her hard work. When you enter you're shot with the black and white pallet around, almost forcing you to frown, however she proceeds to advertise with that "Barbie" smile spread across her face.
The final result of all the discussions , colour picking and construction of the previous episodes is underwhelming, as you would expect more colour and light after waiting that long.
The floors are a black and white marble - so glossy they look as if they were polished with cotton buds. There are large matte black walls encompassing us as Betty leads us from room to room, that instantly send shivers down my spine and goosebumps to my arms. This house could either be used for a horror movie set, or owned by a minimalist nepobaby influencer . Betty walks us into the intersection between the kitchen and living room. There is a chandler that hangs from the ceiling with jewels that genuinely look like they could end world hunger. There is a little pop of colour in the kitchen with the gold hardware on the sink and cabinet hardware, yet it still doesn't bring me to have a "Betty" smile on my face. The living room looks lifeless as the TV camouflages with the wall, and the couches that look like a privilege to sit on. A house should be a place I never want to leave, not a place I so desperately want to escape.
As Betty swiftly takes us through the rooms, it looks as though someone pressed copy, paste and greyscale making them lack uniqueness from each other. Except the master bedroom. It looks like a coffin on steroids from the noir ceiling all the way down to the floor, the colour match is insane as you cant even see a difference in the shades of black. Betty made her way into the room and I made my to the fast forward button.
Fast forward to the backyard. It seemed like a completely different person did the interior design for the backyard. It was a breath of fresh air. From the luminescent pool to the verdant grass all complimenting the clear sky. It felt like I jumped from one universe to another, from the contrast of the dark house to the bright backyard. If only the house matched the backyard would I actually consider purchasing the house.
As the episode was coming to an end so was the era of watching Betty scramble around warehouses looking for paint and edging, sleeping through the hour long episodes of the important meetings Betty attended and speaking my opinion through the screen as if she could hear me. I quite enjoyed the hustle even though the final result wasn't exactly my cup of tea.
I watched a house built from scratch.
